DTL to pay outstanding monies to workers within seven days
- officials, GAWU to discuss further
pay increases
Kaieteur News, 10 October 2007
The Demerara Timbers Limited (DTL) workers who recently went on strike
are to receive all monies that the company owes them within seven days.
The decision came yesterday during a meeting between Chief Labour
Officer Mohamed Akeel, DTL management and officials from the Guyana
Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU).
GAWU General Secretary, Seepaul Narine, told Kaieteur News that DTL
agreed to pay the workers at the Mabura branch all outstanding overtime
pay within three days.
They will also receive all other retroactive payments within seven
days, he said.
In addition, Narine revealed that the union and DTL management will
meet next week for negotiations about pay increases for this year.
“I am satisfied with the outcome (of the discussions). I hope that DTL
will honour the agreement,” he said.
About 150 workers at DTL's Mabura branch took strike action on Friday
after DTL failed to pay them the 5.5 percent increase that they were to
receive in 2006.
The workers, who resumed duty yesterday, had also complained that they
had not received retroactive payment for overtime work.
