Hit-out at GFC sad

Hit-out at GFC sad
Guyana Chronicle, 29 September 2007
The recent hit-outs at the Guyana Forestry Commission and in particular
the Commissioner James Singh is sad in the sense that some people are
more obsessed with personality disagreements rather than the real
issues that must be overcome to aid better operations in the industry.

Time and time, we have seen the campaign by a certain group of persons
against the GFC and its functioning as a body to regulate and guide
development of the forestry sector.

While it is agreed that some of these persons may have a secret agenda,
I am quite sure their voices are heard.

It was announced that several companies are under scrutiny for
suspected breaches of the forestry laws. We were further advised that
an investigation has been launched to determine the accuracy of the
evidence. But the criticism started coming that the GFC was being
pressured by external forces.

If the GFC wasn’t doing anything then the criticisms would have been in
order. Now it is attempting to rectify the wrong and still the
condemnation is high, notably by a few persons.

But while this is happening, we must remind ourselves that it was under
the same commission that the forestry sector grew and enabled many
persons to develop economically. So perhaps it is good to highlight the
good things ongoing as well.
