Kaieteur News, 24 October 2007
Barama Company Limited, on Monday, handed over a building to the
communities of St. Monica and Kariwab in Region Two.
The facility was a parting gift from the company which has ceased
operations in the area.
Liaison for Barama, Mitsy Campbell, told the residents that the
donation was aimed at assisting economic progress in the communities in
that they could use the building to carry out business activities.
The $5M edifice was previously used by Barama to accommodate the 18
workers recruited from the area.
St. Monica's village captain, Raymond Miguel, who received the keys to
the building expressed his appreciation at the gesture, said that the
structure may possibly be used as a tourist resort.
According to Miguel, the recently built roads linking the nearby
communities would assist a great deal in the undertaking.
The Barama officials also donated a computer system to the Ulele
Primary School in St. Monica.
Campbell told the teachers and students at the school to fully utilise
the computer that would enable the region to catch up with the advances
in technology.
The village captain did relate during the handover that the community
never had any problems with the company and now that it has left, the
members of the community would have to return to previous sources of
income such as fashioning craft products.
