Article conveys inaccurate message
THE Delegation of the European Commission to Guyana has noted that the
article, "Rainforest Preservation: Pilot Scheme to Examine Demand for Fair
Compensation" in the Guyana Chronicle issued dated 09/10/07 pertaining to
the launch of the "Guyana Shield Project" which took place on 08/10/07 at
the Le Meridien Pegasus conveys an inaccurate message to the general public.
Please note that the project, "Ecological and financial sustainable
management of the Guyana shield Eco-region", is financed by the European
Commission budget line "Tropical forests and other forests in developing
countries", which provides 75% of the total budget while the UNDP, IUCN and
the Dutch Government provides the remaining 25%. In the course of the
launching the Acting Head of Delegation clarified that the project is part
of the overall effort of the EU to support environmental mainstreaming in
development cooperation globally.
The Delegation is of the opinion that a proper mention of the lead role of
the European Commission in this initiative would have proved a more accurate
report of the event.
