President Jagdeo with Oxford University Entomologist, Dr. George
McGavin and BBC crew members
GUYANA’s rich biological diversity found in its pristine rainforests
will soon be showcased on British television through a documentary
prepared by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The BBC team along with Oxford University Entomologist, Dr. George
McGavin and several other scientists recently concluded a five-week
venture in the forested areas of the Upper Essequibo. Experts on the
different variety of wildlife such as frogs, bats, snakes and rats were
among the group of scientists who accompanied Dr. McGavin

The documentary which is intended to highlight Guyana’s rich forested
resources will be aired on British television.

Dr. McGavin last Saturday paid a courtesy call on Head of State
President Bharrat Jagdeo at State House to talk about the work
experience among other issues.

In the presence of British High Commissioner Fraser Wheeler and the BBC
crew, the Entomologist and President Jagdeo engaged in discussions on
the upcoming climate change conference in Bali, Indonesia, carbon
credits, the Kyoto Protocol, which focuses on mandatory emission
limitations for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and several
other initiatives.

Dr. McGavin considers the experience and work in Guyana as tough and
rewarding but ‘a scratch of the surface’. He said it was not enough in
getting a sense of the magnitude and diversity of Guyana’s natural
resources.

Being among few international entomologists to conduct such works in
Guyana, Dr. McGavin expressed keen interest in returning to further
investigate the hundreds and more new species which the team
encountered.

“I have offered to name one after His Excellency but I will give him
the liberty of making the choice,” Dr. McGavin added. (GINA)
