Are there any plans for re-forestation?
Stabroek News, Tuesday, October 9th 2007

Dear Editor,

Recently there has been much coverage on forestry and mining.

For the benefit of the readers, the various regulatory entities and the
people I would like to ask a few questions and make a few comments:

What if any are the plans/steps in the National Development Strategy
for re-forestation?

What if any are the plans/steps to preserve the pristine environment of
the hinterland after forestry resources are harvested? One must bear in
mind the effect on flora and fauna, the terrain, storm run-off,
erosion, etc.

What plans/steps are in place to make any restoration to surfaces that
have been mined for precious stones/minerals?

What plans/steps if any are in place to convert mined areas to
beneficial economic uses?

I have never read or come across any literature which mentions
practices such as re-forestation, restoration of mines areas. These are
extremely important factors which anyone must take into account when
dealing with and managing resources such as forestry and mining.

Countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and many
developing nations place extreme emphasis on the harvesting of natural
resources while ensuring that in half a century or a century, the
resources are renewed.

This is very prudent and makes monumental good sense.

Yours faithfully,

Sase N Loaknauth
