Forest Act seeks to correct past mistakes
Guyana Chronicle, 11 August 2007
Recent observation has indicated that there are some persons who are
not in agreement with the Guyana Forestry Commission Act of 2007 which
was recently passed in the national assembly.

But don’t we all want better management of our forestry sector? Don’t
we want the necessary regulations and legislative measures put in place
to protect our natural resources? Because as far as I am aware this act
seeks to revise the laws relating to our forests, so why are there
disagreements?

For all we know, this act seeks to change some of the mistakes that
would have been made in the past and transform the decision making
process that previously governed our forests activities for decades.

I cannot agree with persons who say that the act seeks to give the
minister sole power and to cover-up our forestry business. Instead, I
think it is a definitive action to ensure transparency of such matters.

Over the recent months we have seen quite a campaign by some
individuals who claim that they are very concerned about the activities
taking place in the forest. So these persons must be very pleased with
the GFC Act that strongly supports conservation and sustainable
development of the forests.
