Another investor gets the boot

Dear Editor,

It is with deep regret that I learned that another potential investment
was given the boot. Guyana today is in a perilous situation and those
who are there to administer do not seem to care. The irony is the
President talks about Guyana being ready to welcome investors.

Whilst still living in Guyana, I met a very intelligent person involved
in the lumber industry in the USA. He was in Guyana to explore the
possibility of setting up infrastructure to produce value-added wooden
products; that was in the 90s.

It is clear that the PPP is not interested in creating wealth, like
typical third world politicians they know only about squabbling over
bones. Guyana has the best lumber in the world, the existing mills are
outdated and are operating at minimum efficiency. The world needs
finished lumber and Guyana has not done much to take advantage of this.

Guyana is quite comfortable to be in its position at the bottom of the
ladder and to stretch its hands for alms. One person has
single-handedly exposed the ills of the timber industry and the unfair
and unregulated practices prevailing. This recent boot is an indication
that Guyana will never be ready for real business. It is a sad day, the
rest of the Caribbean gets lots of investments while Guyana is a
pariah.

Yours faithfully,

Vijay Singh
