We need to understand
Guyana Chronicle, 5 December 2007
With the Conference on Climate Change convening in Bali, Indonesia this
month, it is pertinent for persons to understand and support Guyana’s
position on the issue and be aware of the strides made locally to
support the fight against climate change because this is something
which affects all nations.
Guyana’s position has been reiterated at several fora, with the
President stressing the need for urgent action on the issue several
times over. Last month, the President called on Heads of Government and
global business leaders to recognise that the global threat from
climate change requires sustained attention from the world’s most
senior political and corporate decision-makers.
The President had also emphasised the need for solutions to provide
incentives for avoiding deforestation to be placed at the heart of a
comprehensive agreement on climate change.
Guyana’s position is that it is willing to identify mechanisms whereby
the country’s rainforest, which is the size of England, can be deployed
in the global battle against climate change. President Jagdeo in
outlining this plan emphasised that rainforest countries could not be
expected to sacrifice their economic development in order to combat
climate change on behalf of the world. Ways could be found to balance
sustainable forestry management practices with ground-breaking
initiatives to support the global battle against climate change.
