GT&T, Barama top beneficiaries of tax exemptions

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited received $1.680B in
tax concessions, topping the list of companies given duty-free
exemptions from the Remission Unit at Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The list, published by the Remission Unit, showed that the total amount
of revenue lost to 78 companies through the foregoing of taxes was
$6.298 billion, from imports totalling $23.080 billion. Barama Company
Limited was among the largest in this category with over $300M; the
Bauxite Company of Guyana, $819M; the Guyana Sugar Corporation,
$799.3M; the Guyana Power and Light with $571.5M; Omai Bauxite Mining
Inc with $506.9M; Omai Services Inc with $408.3M and Oldendorff
Carriers (Guyana) Inc with $131.9M.

Government ministries and departments and semi-autonomous agencies were
given a total of $261.1M in tax exemptions with the Ministry of Health,
the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force being the largest
beneficiaries.

Remigrants - 92 of them - benefited from $144.3M in exempted taxes from
the importation of items with a total CIF (cost, insurance and freight)
value of $119M.
