Land titles for two more Amerindian communities
Guyana Chronicle, 13 July 2007

CABINET this week has approved the granting of land titles to two more
Amerindian communities in Administrative Regions One and Seven,
Secretary to the Cabinet Dr. Roger Luncheon announced yesterday.

He said the approval by Cabinet to grant the land titles has been
assented to by President Bharrat Jagdeo.

Luncheon said the titles to 120 square miles of land in the Waini
community in Region One (Barima/Waini) and 160 square miles of land at
Isseneru, Middle Mazaruni in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni), will be
personally handed over to these communities by President Jagdeo.

“The two decisions will see absolute grants being given to the two
communities,” Luncheon told reporters.

A statement from the Government Information Agency (GINA) noted that
Government’s land titling process in Amerindian communities has been
gaining impetus, with the Government continuing to reaffirm its policy
of conceding to Guyana’s indigenous people their constitutional rights.

In 2005, about five Amerindian communities received their land titles
from President Jagdeo at the Office of the President.

&The PPP/Civic Government is not a fair-weather friend. The PPP/C has
always been concerned about the plight of our indigenous people,”
President Jagdeo declared in September 2005, as he handed over land
titles to Toshaos of the five Amerindian communities.

The communities: Weruni, Muritaro, Malali, Great Falls, and Orealla now
have legal ownership to their land.
