Chinese-based logging company, Bai Shan Lin, has agreed to comply withGovernment's stipulation and construct a factory to create value-addedproduct for export.The company will begin construction on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway assoon as heavily forested land and legal red tape are cleared.The commitment comes one month after the company was barred fromexporting logs from Guyana's shores.The company, which has affiliation to several wood-based companies inChina, has been registered in Guyana to conduct business in theforestry sector with a grant of 300 acres of forested land.To date the company has already constructed a sawmill at the KumakaCreek in the vicinity of Linden.It was during the past six months that senior personnel of the companyheld several discussions with Government representatives, includingPrime Minister Samuel Hinds, the Agriculture Minister, officials fromthe Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) and the Guyana Office forInvestment (GOINVEST).At the meetings, management of the Chinese company had expressed aninterest in the promotion of value-added activities in the forestrysector.Bai Shan Lin failed to comply when it requested permission to exportround logs without the construction of the relevant facility.The company had appealed for a grace period of 12 months, during whichthe export of round logs would be allowed, a request that was refused
