Dear Editor,

I am heartened to see that a number of corrupt practices are being unearthed by the various authorities. It shows that much more work is being done by the Police, CANU and other relevant Government agencies to uproot corruption and crime.

Despite this, I hope that these authorities will continue the good work and will try their best to catch the various criminal elements that seem to be causing havoc in the city and other areas by robbing and terrorizing several homes and businesses. The authorities have their work cut out for them and should receive full support in this regard.

I also praise those responsible for putting a stop to agencies taking advantage of Guyanese for their own gain, for instance companies like Barama and Jailing. It was reported several times that these companies have been taking advantage of especially Amerindians in the interior in terms of labour, on top of taking out logs they were not supposed to from our forest. I was happy to see that the Agriculture Ministry has looked into the matter.

As it relates to other criminal activities, the situation seemed to be hopeless before, but I've noted that now cocaine smugglers are being apprehended, e.g. the recent CANU bust and a Chinese illegal migration ring has been discovered. It was also good to see that a CANU Officer was sacked when it was found that money was being stolen from overseas visitors during searches.

This is the kind of thing honest Guyanese want to see-crooks being exposed. It shows too that the Revenue body is taking on the challenge of corruption in its ranks and looking at the issue seriously. The GRA, CANU and all other related bodies need to continue ensuring that these corrupt elements are exposed quickly so that they will not corrupt other law-abiding workers of the entities and give them a bad name.

Yours faithfully,

Brian Watson
