Forestry regulations must be reviewed
Kaieteur News, 29 January 2008
Dear Editor,
The Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) is trying to destablise the
entire forestry sector with the new regulations.
The stakeholders will accept the regulations, but the prices for
lumber will escalate to approx $300 for kabukalli, and maybe more. The
building sector will fall if the President does not step in and review
these regulations. These new regulations in all the different
government departments are helping government officials to get more
bribes, be it forestry officers, policemen, customs officers etc.
The safety, separation of species, and packing regulations can be
considered, but not grading for local marketing.
Grading for every piece of lumber is unacceptable. Mr James Singh, I
am wondering if you ever went to a sawmill. Come James, think.
