Potential investors in Guyana's Forest products recently received a first-hand look at samples of Guyana's hardwood species when a number of local producers attended the International Wood Products Association (IWPA) World of Wood Convention in California USA, recently.

Representatives from the Forest Products Marketing Council of Guyana (FPMC), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/ Guyana Trade and Investment Support project(GTIS) and a number of local companies including Toolsie Persaud Limited attended the March 28-20 convention, a USAID statement said.

The statement said the convention attracted nearly 400 manufacturers, importers, logistics providers and other wood products industry representatives from around the world.

The FPMC hosted a booth at the exposition where potential investors were able to learn about Guyana's forestry sector.

USAID said attendance at the convention was in support of the Ministry of Agriculture's diversification plan and quoted FPMC Director Luvindra Sukhraj as saying that attending the IWPA was important because it opens the door for Guyana into the international marketplace and allows for market research and influences changes and development in the forestry sector here.

Andre Cummings, managing director of Fine Woods Marketing was quoted in the statement and said that from Guyana's standpoint, having market intelligence and information was "the key to our future growth".

USAID said this was the second year in a row that Guyana was represented at the IWPA show and as a result of last year's participation, a number of international companies have established offices in Guyana to work with local firms and purchase value-added wood products produced in the country.

The statement said too that USAID/GTIS would continue to provide assistance to the forest products sector to help Guyana become more competitive in the international market and develop export market opportunities.
